BOSTON, Aug. 18, 2014—The man whom prosecutors say was behind the wheel when his Ford Explorer struck and killed Jessica Campbell and John Lanzillotti was held on high bail at his arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court this morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

He is charged with two counts of motor vehicle homicide and one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Henning told the court that Campbell, 27, and Lanzillotti, 28, were together at the intersection of Beacon and Fairfield streets shortly after 9:00 p.m. on June 21. He said Alfageeh was travelling westbound on Beacon when the light at Fairfield turned red. Alfageeh allegedly continued through the red light, struck the front end of another vehicle in the intersection, spun through the intersection, and came to rest on its roof after hitting two parked cars.

Both Campbell and Lanzillotti were struck by the Explorer as it skidded through the crosswalk, suffering injuries that claimed both their lives.

Boston Police detectives and crash reconstruction experts immediately began investigating the collision to determine the facts of the collision and the identity of the driver. In light of conflicting witness statements on that latter point, the case was presented to the Suffolk County Grand Jury, which has the power to compel testimony and subpoena medical records, surveillance footage, and other evidence. The grand jury returned its indictments Thursday.

Alfageeh was ordered to surrender his passport while the case is pending. He will return to court on Sept. 22 for a pre-trial conference with attorney John Seed. Katherine Moran is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate.

Jun 17, 2014

BOSTON, June 17, 2014—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today invited non-profit organizations that work with kids and teens to apply for his annual series of cash awards that provide the young people of Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop with constructive alternatives to crime and drug use.

The annual funds, which total $50,000 this year, are disbursed from Conley’s Asset Forfeiture Community Reinvestment Program. The program takes cash and assets seized in drug trafficking prosecutions and awards them to non-profit organizations that help Suffolk County’s young people avoid drugs, gangs, and other risky activity.

“The tens of thousands of dollars we donate through this program each year allow non-profits to continue their important work with young people,” Conley said.  “By offering positive role models and activities that engage kids and teens in the community, these organizations help prosecutors and community leaders achieve our goal of keeping kids and teens away from gangs, drugs, and violence.”

Award recipients are selected each year by an independent panel of county residents appointed by the district attorney. Non-profit organizations that wish to apply for one of this year’s awards may download an application from http://www.suffolkdistrictattorney.com/partnerships-and-prevention/asset-forfeiture-reinvestment-program/asset-forfeiture-reinvestment-program/. Inquiries should be directed to Tanya Brussa-Pagan, Director of Community Relations, at 617-619-4163 or Tanya.Brussa-Pagan@massmail.state.ma.us. Completed applications must be emailed to her no later than 5 p.m. on Aug. 22.

State law allows up to 10 percent of money from the auctions of dealers’ property and confiscated funds to be returned to the community. Under Conley’s leadership, the program has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in seized drug money to dozens of youth groups, community centers, and social service agencies at no cost to taxpayers: state auditors last year reviewed the process in Suffolk County and gave it high marks for turning “the profits of crime into something positive for the community” while carefully documenting all forfeiture-related income and expenditures.

BOSTON, May 7, 2014—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley is recruiting young leaders to help staff his Youth Advisory Council, a 21-member body drawn from across the region to provide input on policy, legislation, and crime-fighting strategies affecting young people.

“Young people today are smarter and more sophisticated than ever before,” Conley said. “They’re opinionated and they’re ready to share their views if adults are ready to listen. The Youth Advisory Council is an opportunity for them to build experience for future leadership, but it’s every bit as much an opportunity for us to explore new and effective ideas.”

Applicants to the Youth Advisory Council should be entering their sophomore or junior years of high school this fall and represent all walks of life. Conley is casting a broad net for potential members, drawing candidates from schools in Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop; Action for Boston Community Development, Inc.; the Talented and Gifted Latino Program, which serves high school students at UMass Boston; the Children’s Services of Roxbury’s Youth and Police in Partnership program; and other sources.

“Our goal is to recruit as diverse a field of panelists as possible,” Conley said. “We’re looking for young people with ideas and initiative, but we also want them to represent the face of Suffolk County in terms of ethnicity, socio-economic background, and life experience. The short-term goal is input from a committed group of young leaders, but the long-term goal is to build awareness and engagement in all of Suffolk County’s youth.”

The Youth Advisory Council will meet regularly with the DA, members of his senior staff, and other interested adults who will help them identify issues of importance to area youth, develop policy recommendations, testify on legislative initiatives, and more. Their most urgent activity will relate to gun violence, dating violence, and substance abuse, but they will be encouraged to study and address other issues as well. Academic credit for participation will be determined by the student’s school and the council will provide valuable volunteer experience for prospective college students.

“There’s much more to the District Attorney’s office than prosecution,” Conley said. “We want to show our policymaking side to teens who might not have considered us when thinking about government and public service.”

Interested youth are invited to complete the SCDA Youth Advisory Council Application and send it to Legislative Director Fatima Breton at Fatima.Breton@massmail.state.ma.us. They are due by email or US Mail by the close of business on May 23.
