A Boston University hockey player was held on $10,000 cash bail today following his arraignment for allegedly raping a fellow student, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.
Brighton District Court Judge Franco Gobourne additionally ordered MAX NICASTRO (D.O.B. 3/2/90) to stay away from and have no contact with the victim while the case is pending. Nicastro is expected to return to court on the rape charge on March 26.
Assistant District Attorney Gloriann Moroney of Conley’s Family Protection and Sexual Assault Bureau told the court that the Boston University Police Department received a call early Sunday morning reporting that a female student had been raped and needed assistance in getting to the hospital.
Officers responded to the victim’s residence, where they found her to be teary and visibly upset, Moroney said. In the course of an interview, the young woman said she had been raped and identified her assailant as Nicastro. Officers summoned medical assistance, and the victim was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for further treatment.
Based on the victim’s statement and additional evidence gathered throughout the morning, additional BUPD officers went to Nicastro’s residence and placed him under arrest.
Conley urged the victims of any crime, including sexual assault, to call 911 in an emergency. Survivors of sexual violence may also call the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s 24-hour hotline at 800-841-8371. The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center provides medical advocacy, legal services, counseling, and other services to victims of rape and sexual assault.
“Rape is a crime of violence that we take extremely seriously,” Conley said. “But in addition to our work in the courtroom, we’re also committed to supporting the victim. Our concern now is for her well-being.”
Anne Kelley-McCarthy is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Nicastro is represented by attorney Hugh Curran.
