Jury Convicts Defendant in 2017 Double Murder
Offensive outbursts by Defendant force his removal from court
BOSTON, December 10, 2019 — The man who killed two doctors after invading their South Boston luxury condominium in 2017 has been found guilty of their murders, Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said today.
A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted BAMPUMIM TEIXEIRA, 33, of two counts of first degree murder, in the May 5, 2017, killings of Dr. Lina Bolanos, 38, and her fiancé Dr. Richard Field, 49, inside their South Boston penthouse. Jurors deliberated for less than eight hours before returning the guilty verdicts, which also included two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping, and one count of armed home invasion.
During the course of eight days of testimony, Assistant District Attorney John Pappas proved that the defendant, who was previously employed as a concierge at the Macallen Building at 141 Dorchester Ave., used his knowledge of the building to enter through the garage on May 5, 2017. Dr. Bolanos and Dr. Field lived together in an 11th floor unit. Unaware of the defendant’s presence in the building, Dr. Bolanos arrived home at approximately 5:00 p.m. Dr. Field arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m.
From inside the residence, text messages were sent from Dr. Field’s phone to a friend stating there was gunman in the apartment and to call 911. The individual called the building’s front desk and then Boston Police. After receiving a call from the victim’s friend, the Macallen Building’s front desk attendant also called 911.
Upon their arrival at the building, Boston Police officers observed a set of keys outside the victims’ top-floor unit that they used to enter the residence. The lights inside the unit were off, and responding officers encountered the defendant inside the unit. Based on reports that there was an armed gunman in the condominium and their own observations, officers believed the defendant to be armed. Two officers fired their weapons, striking the defendant twice. As first responders prepared to transport him to a hospital for treatment, he made claims that there was another armed individual inside the residence.
Inside the residence, responding officers located the bodies of Dr. Bolanos and Dr. Field. Each had been bound and suffered massive trauma. Two backpacks were recovered at the scene. One bag, located just inside the entrance to the victims’ residence, contained jewelry belonging to Dr. Bolanos, as well as other incriminating evidence. The second was found in the location where the defendant was apprehended; it contained a replica gun, a roll of duct tape, a mask, pliers, scissors, a tactical knife, used duct tape with clumps of hair, and items belonging to the victims. Near the bag, officers found a large carving knife, and a bright yellow shirt. The shirt was consistent with that worn by an individual captured in security camera footage as he lurked outside the building’s garage as early as 2:40 p.m. that day.
“I would like to thank Former District Attorney John Pappas, my Chief Trial Counsel, for his hard work on this case. Assisting him were several other prosecutors, victim witness advocates, and staff, as well as the Boston Police Department who all worked tirelessly to hold this defendant accountable and support the victims’ families through this unspeakable tragedy,” District Attorney Rollins said. “No verdict can ever fill the void created by the violent deaths of Dr. Bolanos and Dr. Fields, but I hope their loved ones today have a sense of finality knowing that the man who stole these lives has been found guilty. He will serve the rest of his natural life behind bars and never again will have the opportunity to harm another member of our community.”
DA Rollins added: "The families of the victims exhibited such grace, dignity and restraint through a grueling trial where the defendant added insult to injury by making outrageous and dishonoring claims about the victims. The defendant's outbursts today were extremely disrespectful and hurtful to the victims’ families and threatening against the prosecutor and his family. These matters will not be taken lightly and I offer my sincere apology that the families had to endure this egregious behavior."
Tina Nguyen is District Attorney Rollins’ victim witness advocate assigned to the case. The defendant is represented by Steven Sack. Sentencing before Judge Mitchell Kaplan will take place on Dec. 13 in courtroom 907 of Suffolk Superior Court.
