Weymouth, Revere men held for attempted robbery near Mass and Cass

BOSTON, May 26, 2022— Two men were arraigned Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court Central Division for attempting to rob a man in the Mass and Cass area of Boston, District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

JOSEPH KAHLER, 30, of Weymouth and ANDREW HONOHAN, 39, of Revere were each charged with one count of armed robbery. Kahler is also charged with one count of resisting arrest. Assistant District Attorney Anthony Bush requested that both defendants be held on $10,000 cash bail, be ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the victim and stay away from the location of the incident.  Bush also asked Judge Maureen Flaherty to revoke the bail on each of the defendants’ open dockets. Flaherty allowed both motions and ordered Kahler and Honohan to be held without bail for 60 days, and to be held on $1,000 after.

According to Boston Police, at around 5:19 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a call alleging that several males were robbing an individual at 30 Northampton Street. Responding officers found the men matching the description at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard. Kahler sprinted into oncoming traffic on Melnea Cass Boulevard before officers restrained and handcuffed him. Officers found Honohan at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Harrison Avenue. They frisked him and found a large silver knife. Officers recovered the victim's wallet in the area where they took Kahler into custody.

The victim told police he was in his car when an unknown male entered and removed the key from the ignition. Another male, wearing a white shirt over his face, entered the rear passenger seat and put the victim in a chokehold, threatening to stab him if he didn't give them his possessions. The victim told officers the male in the backseat then "went through my pockets."

Security footage from a nearby business captured the entire incident. It showed Kahler enter the vehicle, followed by Honohan.

The defendants return to court on June 27 for a probable cause hearing.
