High bails ordered for two arrested amid firearms and drugs investigation

BOSTON, January 10, 2024 – Two Boston men are facing numerous firearm and drug trafficking charges after officers recovered eight firearms, numerous rounds of ammunition, 1,609 grams of Fentanyl, 958 grams of black tar heroin, and over two kilograms of cocaine from their home last week, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

LUIS PEREZ-PENA, 30, and ELVIN PENA-CABRERA, 28, were both charged in Dorchester BMC with eight counts of illegal possession of a firearm, three counts of possession of a large capacity feeding device, illegal possession of ammunition, trafficking cocaine over 200 grams, trafficking Fentanyl over 200 grams, and possession to distribute a class A drug.

Judge Lisa Ann Grant ordered Perez-Pena held on $75,000 bail and Pena-Cabrera held on $25,000 bail. Both are due back in court February 9 for probable cause hearings.

On the morning of January 5, members of the Boston police and the FBI’s Metro Boston Gang Task Force were conducting surveillance on a Milton Avenue residence as part of an ongoing drug investigation. At about 2:08 p.m., officers observed an unknown male enter the residence with Perez-Pena. Officers then observed the unknown male exit the residence and enter his vehicle, his actions consistent with what officers believed to be a drug transaction.

At about 9:04 p.m., investigators executed a search warrant of the Milton Avenue residence and seized one Glock P80 with 14 rounds; one Sig Sauer P365 pistol with eight rounds; one Sig Sauer Sp2022 pistol with an attached Foxtrot flashlight, loaded with 15 rounds; one unloaded Sig Sauer pistol with gold accents; one silver Colt Python Revolver loaded with six rounds; one Ruger .22 caliber assault rifle with a Bushnell Scope, loaded with 25 rounds; one brown Ithaca Arms 12-gauge shotgun; and one brown Remington Arms 12-gauge shotgun, all located in a bedroom.

Officers also recovered boxes of assorted ammunition, two kilograms and an additional 85 grams of cocaine, 958 grams of black tar heroin, and 1,069 grams of Fentanyl.

“This is an operation that very clearly illuminates the basic and constant connection between illegal guns and illegal drugs in our neighborhoods.  In this case there are large—and potentially deadly—amounts of both. This operation began as a drug investigation and it certainly ended up taking a lot of dangerous drugs off our streets.  It also took a lot of illegal firepower out of our neighborhoods.  For that we’re all safer, and for that I’m extremely grateful,” Hayden said.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
