Malden man charged with shooting at a Dorchester home held without bail pending dangerousness hearing Thursday

BOSTON, May 14, 2025 – A dangerousness hearing will be held Thursday in Roxbury BMC for a Malden man charged with firing bullets into a Dorchester home in March, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

DAVID IOVANNA JR., 22, of Malden was charged Monday with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, and malicious destruction of property over $1,200.

Judge David Poole ordered Iovanna held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Thursday.

At about 4:01 a.m. on March 29, Boston police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 16 Sargent Street. While canvassing the area, officers located three 9mm shell casings on the sidewalk.

Investigators obtained video footage from surrounding homes that showed an unknown male, later identified as Iovanna, wearing a dark jacket, walk up to Sargent Street from Howard Avenue, appear to discharge a firearm four times, then run back toward Howard Avenue.

Officers observed three apparent bullet holes in the side of the home, including one between the exterior and interior walls next to a bed.

Video surveillance also shows a black Jeep Wrangler turn onto Sargent Street with its headlights turned off prior to the shooting. Upon parking, Iovanna and a passenger in the car are seen opening the hood of the Wrangler. The passenger is seen returning to the car while Iovanna walks up to Sargent Street and appears to discharge his firearm four times in the location where the shell casings were later located.

Based on video footage and witness statements, investigators were able to identify Iovanna and obtain a warrant for his arrest. The passenger has not been identified.

“This is yet another example of technology—in this case, the ShotSpotter system and residential video footage—assisting investigators in quickly responding to a scene and then identifying a suspect.  Reckless hardly begins to describe the decision to send bullets flying into a dwelling,” Hayden said.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
