New Hampshire man sentenced to decades in prison for multiple rapes
BOSTON, June 2, 2025 – A New Hampshire man was sentenced today to up to 34 years in state prison after being convicted last month on three separate rapes occurring between April and June of 2023, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
MAXWELL NEWMAN, 25, of Newton, NH was convicted by a Suffolk County jury on May 16 of four counts of rape, three counts of assault and battery, two counts of assault to rape, and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Judge Debra Squires-Lee imposed a sentence of 28 to 34 years in state prison followed by five years of probation, noting Newman’s “repeated acts of violence, deliberate targeting of vulnerable women and degrading treatment” of the victims.
On April 20, 2023, Newman was driving in the area of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard when he approached the first victim. Newman brought the woman to a secluded parking lot at 128 Gerard Street and raped her.
On June 12, 2023, at about 1:30 a.m., Newman was again driving in the area of Mass and Cass when he approached the second victim outside a Sunoco gas station. He offered to pay the victim $120 and brought her to the same Gerard Street parking lot despite the victim’s request to go elsewhere. Newman grabbed the victim and smashed her head on the ground. Newman then proceeded to rape her and told her to “pretend like you like it.”
The victim immediately reported the crimes to the police and was taken to a local hospital.
Later that evening on June 12, Newman returned to the area of Mass and Cass and approached the third victim and invited her into his vehicle. Newman drove her around Boston, then to his home in New Hampshire and then to a parking lot in Pemberton State Park.
Two fishermen were walking back to their car when they heard the victim screaming and observed Newman on top of her. The victim was observed to be actively bleeding with fresh swelling, bruises and abrasions to her face. The victim reported being punched in the face, beaten and raped, but did not fight back because she feared for her life.
Detectives were able to identify Newman through video footage showing Newman entering and exiting the state park in his Kia Forte. Video obtained from the car’s dash camera and Newman’s cellphones also corroborated some of Newman’s interactions with the victims.
In October 2023 detectives received a CODIS hit indicating that DNA from the first two assaults were from the same perpetrator. A DNA sample obtained via court order after Newman’s June 24, 2023 arrest for the third rape linked him to the DNA recovered in the first two rapes.
“Maxwell Newman set out to terrorize some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society and he did exactly that, including assaulting two victims in the same day. I’m proud of the investigators, prosecutors and victim witness advocates who helped secure a measure of justice for these women, and I’m grateful that the jurors held this man accountable for his cruel actions,” Hayden said.
Assistant District Attorneys Rita Muse and Jillian Kennedy prosecuted the case. Nicole Crosta is the assigned victim witness advocate.
All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
