Canton man held without bail in May Roxbury shooting death
BOSTON, September 5, 2025 – JORDAN EVANS, 32, of Canton was ordered held without bail today after being charged in Roxbury BMC with the May 3, 2025 shooting death of Shakar Caterson in Roxbury, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
Evans was found hiding under his mother’s bed in Canton by members of the Boston Police Fugitive Task Force on Thursday. He will return to court October 3 for a pre-trial hearing.
Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Grasso said that at about 10:53 p.m. on May 3 Boston police responded to a ShotSpotter activation for two gunshots at Blue Hill Avenue and Georgia Street. Upon arrival, officers located Shakar Caterson, 35, of Dorchester on the sidewalk, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was transported by Boston EMS to the Boston Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two spent .40-caliber shell casings were recovered on the sidewalk near where Caterson was located and Caterson’s vehicle was found parked in the crosswalk, with the engine running and headlights on. Investigators were able to access and review surveillance footage from a city-owned camera that captured much of the incident. Minutes before the shooting, two men were captured walking on Georgia Street toward Blue Hill Avenue. Caterson pulls up, exits his vehicle, and approaches the second man, later identified as Evans. Caterson appears to lunge at or shove Evans. Within seconds, Evans raises and extends his right arm in a manner consistent with pointing a firearm. One second later, Caterson collapses, apparently shot. Although partially obscured by a passing MBTA bus, the timing of Evans’s arm being raised aligns with the ShotSpotter activation time. The two shell casings were found in close proximity to where Evans had been standing.
Following the shooting, the suspects then fled on foot into the municipal parking lot that runs parallel to Blue Hill Avenue, off Georgia Street. Additional surveillance footage captured them entering a gray SUV, believed to be a Nissan Rogue, that fled the area at a high rate of speed. Investigators determined that the vehicle was registered to Evans’s mother at a Canton address.
Surveillance video from the McDonalds on Warren Street in Roxbury captured the vehicle’s license plate as it drove through the drive-thru about 20 minutes before the shooting. Video showed the front passenger of the vehicle exiting and approaching the drive-thru window on foot. The footage captured a clear image of the individual, later identified as Evans.
Through further surveillance video footage, investigators were able to track the vehicle from the time it left the McDonalds to the shooting scene approximately 10 minutes prior to the shooting. After the shooting, investigators again tracked the vehicle on surveillance camera as it fled the scene. It was captured on city of Boston surveillance cameras traveling on Blue Hill Avenue and River Street toward the Milton border. The vehicle was next captured as it entered the town of Canton via Route 138 at about 11:13 p.m., about 20 minutes after the shooting. Investigators recovered surveillance footage from the apartment complex across the street from Evans’s mother’s residence which showed a vehicle believed to be the Nissan Rogue arriving approximately eight minutes later.
“This was a careful and thorough investigation that pieced together the presence of the defendant and his car before, during and after the shooting. Technology is certainly an asset in criminal investigations, but it still requires time and skill to gather that technology into usable evidence,” Hayden said.
All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
