Boston man arraigned for Fenway ATM robbery and larceny
BOSTON, April 28, 2026 – A Boston man with a history of theft and assault convictions dating back to 2005 was arraigned Friday in Roxbury BMC on robbery charges after he attempted to steal money from a man at an ATM, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
ALEX REIS, 44, was charged with unarmed robbery, trespassing, and larceny under $1200. Judge Dana Pierce set bail at $2,500 and ordered Reis to stay away from the victim and the location of the incident. Reis will return to court May 20 for a probable cause hearing.
At around 4:45 p.m. on April 23, officers were alerted to a robbery in progress at a TD Bank ATM at 1333 Boylston Street. The victim, a 22-year-old man, said that while withdrawing money from the ATM an individual, later identified as Reis, grabbed the money from his hands. The victim said the two briefly struggled over the cash before Reis pushed him to the ground and fled. Reis ran into a nearby Target where police, using a description provided by the victim, detained him.
While being escorted from the store Reis gave officers a false name and $65 worth of Target merchandise fell from his person. Officers reviewed surveillance footage of the ATM robbery and positively identified Reis.
Police noted that Reis has been trespassed from all Target locations in Suffolk County. Trespassing orders are useful in helping authorities address repeat shoplifting offenders, Hayden said.
“This is a good example of the type of person we’re focusing on. Someone who not only impacts retail stores, but victimizes the public as well. In this case, all in the same incident. Our residents deserve to be safe in stores or at ATMs, always,” Hayden said.
Hayden’s office, the Boston Police department, regional retailer groups and small business owners in 2024 launched the Safe Shopping Initiative, an effort to increase consumer safety and help store managers strategize responses to shoplifting and retail larcenies. The initiative formed amid increasing national and local frustrations around retail crime, along with concerns over the closure of several pharmacies serving minority communities in Boston.
All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
