Boston man and woman charged with assaulting police during gun, drug arrest

BOSTON, May 4, 2026 – A Boston man and woman were charged Thursday in BMC Central with attacking police during a gun and drug arrest the day before, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

DERIC FARO, 40, was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a class B substance subsequent offense, possession of a class A substance, possession of a class E substance, receiving stolen property, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Faro additionally had two outstanding warrants from Haverhill and Lawrence. Judge James Coffey ordered Faro to be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on May 6.

KATELYN ZANGARI, 35, was charged with four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Coffey set bail at $500.  Zangari will return to court May 29 for a pretrial hearing.

At about 7:45 p.m. on April 29, officers learned that a man with face tattoos and wearing a dark jacket, hat, and backpack, later identified as Faro, was in possession of a handgun inside a crossbody bag. Faro was accompanied by a woman in a white hat and blue sweatpants. Officers stopped Faro and the woman, later identified as Zangari, at Massachusetts Avenue and Washington Street and recovered from Faro’s crossbody bag a Sig Sauer P365 9mm handgun with eight rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber. Officers also recovered from Faro a plastic bag of crack cocaine.

Faro and Zangari became aggressive, screaming and resisting officers attempting to restrain them. Zangari slipped her hands out of handcuffs and kicked and scratched officers. She also spat saliva and blood, some of which hit an officer’s face and entered his mouth. Zangari kicked an officer in the stomach and groin area three times while being detained. Responding EMTs placed a spit hood over Zangari’s head before placing her in an ambulance.

Faro also resisted arrest, kicking parked cars and attempting to kick officers. Officers had to hold his arms and legs to place him into a patrol wagon. Faro kicked the door of the wagon prior to being transported.

“This violent incident speaks to the sheer unpredictability of a police officer’s every shift, and to the various ways offenders can harm officers if they have the mindset to do so, which these two individuals certainly did,” Hayden said.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
