Nathan Allen In His Own Words

Two Days Before Committing Hate-Fueled Murders in Winthrop He Pens “The Allen Diaries”

BOSTON, July 7, 2021 — As investigators continue to examine the tragic events of June 26, 2021 in Winthrop, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office and state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies working on the matter are learning more troubling details about the man who gunned down Air Force veteran Ramona Cooper and retired Massachusetts State Trooper David Green.

Nathan Allen had two weapons with him on June 26th, a .9mm caliber semi-automatic pistol and a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. In addition to his weapons, he also carried hate fueled by white supremacy.

Massachusetts State Police continue to review volumes of extremist literature that Allen read with frequency over the last several months. Additionally, the State Police recovered many of Allen’s journals in his apartment.  Here are some excerpts from Allen’s written journals, which have been edited with asterisks to not repeat the offensive language.  In one notebook, he wrote:

“White people are the worlds apex predators.”

“Whites in the USA are waking up. FACT.”

“Blacks are f**king losers. All of them.”

“They know they are inferior to us.”

“The white race is superior.”

In another notebook he again wrote about apex predators and stated some of his beliefs:

“Men need to kill things.”

“Women do not understand men.”

In a different notebook he wrote:

“Whites will play the knockout game with n*gs. All its gonna take is a lil nudge, then whites in the US will snap and kill all the s**tskins. Its in our blood. Its nature. Racism is good. Natural. Killing s**tskins is in our blood. We need to do it. We are apex predators.” After that entry, he drew two swastikas.

In a notebook found next to his bed, Allen penned something called ‘The Allen Diaries.” The diary entry was dated June 24, 2021 at 10:35 pm -- less than 48 hours before Allen shot and killed Staff Sergeant Cooper and Trooper Green. Allen wrote:

“I remember the first black I ever hated…Darrell or…Some f**king r**arded m**key n**ger name. A f**king smelly violent r**ard. I can see it immediately. 1,000,000 yrs. of evolution molded me to hate these subhumans.”

Two pages later in “The Allen Diaries” he wrote:

“Through middle and high school I met n**ger after n**ger that was just f**king terrible to be around. I’m done. They f**king suck.”

One page later, he wrote:

“Racism is healthy and natural. And holding it in is bad for you.  Consider this my Rx. F**k n**gers.”

On the last page of “The Allen Diaries” he ends with the following:

“Jesus Christ I hate n**gers. I hope I can turn Audrey to the truth or her to me. But I f**king doubt it. When will it all pop off?”

Less than 48 hours later, he violently took two lives and changed those families and the Town of Winthrop forever.

“Three separate families, and the entire Winthrop community have experienced significant trauma.  The Cooper family, the Green family and the Allen family are now inextricably tied. Over the last eleven days the community has come together to mourn the tragic loss of Staff Sergeant Cooper and Trooper Green, honoring the heroes that they are. It is also important to acknowledge that the Allen family is mourning too. They are mourning the loss of the Nathan Allen they thought they knew. This man had fooled so many, outwardly appearing stable and upstanding while internally filled with extremist ideologies and hatred,” said District Attorney Rollins.

“The Allen family is devastated by the deaths of Staff Sergeant Cooper and Trooper Green and offer their heartfelt condolences to each family.  The Allen family – including Nathan’s parents, sibling, wife, and her parents – have met with our investigative team at every request and have cooperated at each turn. We would not have had immediate access to all of the information we do now without their full cooperation. Further, there has been no indication or evidence that the Allen family was aware of Nathan’s intent or apparent ideologies. They have stated that they denounce any form of hatred or racism and request privacy during this difficult time. All three of these families – the Coopers, the Greens, and the Allens - are survivors of homicide, and my office will provide resources and assistance in whatever way we can for them.”

The investigation is continuing and state police assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office continue to examine Allen’s past and are also seeking to speak with anyone who witnessed the events on June 26th, or came into contact with him prior to the events that Saturday afternoon. If you have information to share, please call 617-727-8817.

This double homicide comes amid a disturbing rise in hate crimes across the country.  Less than a week after the murders of Staff Sergeant Cooper and Trooper Green, a rabbi was violently attacked near a Jewish day school in Brighton. The suspect in that attack, KHALID AWAD, 24, of Brighton faces a dangerousness hearing tomorrow in the Brighton Division of Boston Municipal Court.

“The investigation into the murders in Winthrop and the violent attack in Brighton are ongoing,” District Attorney Rollins said. “Our freedom to live and thrive as our full and authentic selves is precious. Who you are, love, pray to, or identify as, is fundamental. It must be fiercely protected, both by those of us in law enforcement who have the ability through our prosecutions to hold offenders accountable and by the people in the community who show up, stand up, and demonstrate by their presence and numbers that love overcomes hate, understanding overcomes fear, and light overcomes darkness.  We have seen this in the beautiful outpouring of support shown by the members of the Winthrop and the Brighton communities that have said loud and clear, ‘Hate has no place in Suffolk County,’ ” said District Attorney Rollins.  “I plan on attending the dangerousness hearing tomorrow in Brighton.  We have seen a significant increase in hate and vitriol based squarely in anti-semitism and I stand in solidarity with the Jewish community denouncing such behavior and actions.

“Finally, in each of these incidents - Winthrop and Brighton - there was exceptional police work done. Had the police not intervened, each incident could have resulted in far more violence and harm.  The Sergeant in Winthrop showed tremendous restraint when engaging with Allen and immediately rendered aid when Allen refused to drop his weapon after murdering two people.  The Boston Police Officers from D14 also showed tremendous restraint when they came into contact with Mr. Awad and de-escalated the situation prior to ultimately arresting him. I commend this outstanding police work. The community and the Suffolk County DA's Office offers our gratitude for your service.”

The FBI’s statistics show hate crimes rose to the highest level in more than a decade in 2019.  The data show that 57.5 percent of reported hate crimes were motivated by racial or ethnic bias. Of those racially-motivated offenses, 47.9 percent were motivated specifically by anti-Black hatred. Religious bias motivated 20.2 percent of reported hate crimes in 2019, with antisemitism driving 57.8 percent of religious bias hate crimes.

The disturbing trend has continued as anti-Asian hate rose throughout the global pandemic. Research conducted at California State University at San Bernardino found that anti-Asian hate crimes rose 145 percent in major U.S. cities from 2019 to 2020.  The available data does not capture the true reach of hate crimes, as these offenses often go unreported.

The rise in hate crimes also comes amid a rise in known hate groups in the United States. The Southern Poverty Law Center reported a 55 percent increase in the number of hate groups operating in the United States from 2017 to 2019.

Victims and witnesses of any crime are encouraged to call 911 in an emergency.  There are additional resources available to victims of hate crimes and bias-motivated acts. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s Civil Rights Division can be reached at 617-963-2917, or individuals can file a civil rights complaint here.

The Anti-Defamation League provides additional support for individuals who have experienced or witnessed hate-motivated incidents and provides anti-hate educational resources and advocacy.  Information on hate crimes and resources on combating hate groups are available from the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Finally, our office will be working with Brighton and the Town of Winthrop to assist with coordination of care regarding mental health and trauma services, counseling and treatment opportunities as these communities begin to heal.
