Statement of DA Rollins on August 7, 2020, Breaking and Entering in Downtown Crossing

BOSTON, August 7, 2020— ALEXANDER MANN, 18, of Stonington, Conn., and CARLOS ESPINOZA, 18, of Westbrook, Conn., were arraigned today in the Central Division of the Boston Municipal Court on charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony and larceny over $1,200.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney John Mooney, Judge Paul Treseler set bail for each at $500 and ordered the men to stay away from the City of Boston.

“These young men took more than $14,000 worth of luxury goods for their own benefit. It was a crime of greed.  The store owner does not deserve, and should not have to endure, this type of behavior.  The value of the merchandise (over $1200) makes Mann and Espinoza’s crimes felonies,’’ said District Attorney Rachael Rollins. “It is my hope that much of the recovered merchandise will be returned to the store, undamaged.  To be clear, this is not a crime that is on my List of 15 low-level misdemeanors where the majority of the individuals charged have substance use disorders, mental health traumas, and food and housing insecurities.  No. The instant charges are felonies where $14,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.  Very different.”

Mann was represented by Attorney Rizwan Huda and Espinoza by Attorney Ambar Maceo.  Their next court date will take place on August 20, 2020, via teleconference.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
