Remarks of District Attorney Kevin Hayden on the Homicide of Marine Veteran Daniel Martinez

First, I want to thank the Boston Police Department and prosecutors from my office for their excellent work on this case.  They acted quickly and thoroughly and they should be commended and deserve everyone’s gratitude.

The depth of heartbreak for Mr. Martinez’s family and for all of those who knew and loved him is incalculable.  I thank him for his service as a Marine and I send my deepest sympathies to his family and everyone who served with him.

This incident is also heartbreaking for Boston, and it’s heartbreaking for our city and for how it may be perceived by the larger world.

I asked a group of students just last week at one of our city schools to be strong for each other, and to care for each other, and to send healing thoughts to those who have been hurt.  Today, I ask the same things from the residents of Boston.  We can not let terrible acts like this define our great city.  We need to work together, in every way possible, to make sure that Boston is safe, and to make sure we heal from this incidents and help victims heal, and to make sure that our residents and our visitors experience Boston for the great city it is.
