Services over Sentences (SOS)

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has partnered with North Suffolk Community Services (NSCS) to provide substance use disorder and mental health related treatment to high risk, high need individuals in the area of “Mass and Cass” and across the county of Suffolk. Providing a multi-disciplinary team of trained professionals, utilizing evidence-based practices such as CBT, MI, DBT and more, in a compassionate and trauma informed way, this program offers a separate but parallel entry-into-recovery-system that defendants meeting criteria can engage with during the pendency of active criminal cases. Criminal cases will not be delayed by participation.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to expand the SOS program by engaging with additional service providers in support of criminal legal system case-management and recovery support services for eligible defendants struggling with substance use disorders. These services are to be conducted in coordination with the existing Services over Sentences (SOS) system, committed to providing alternatives to traditional prosecution where appropriate. With this expansion we seek to take on an increased case volume, with an intentional focus on dealing with substance use disorders, including a specialized effort as to the opioid epidemic which exists in the geographic area surrounding the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard (Mass & Cass).
